Boating Accident with One Still Missing

According to yesterdays’ San Francisco Chronicle, The Gate reports the U.S. Coast Guard plucked one man, clinging to a life preserver, from the surf off Ocean Beach Sunday afternoon April 10, 2011 but rescuers are still searching for another man after their sailboat and an inflatable raft collapsed south of the Cliff House.

The report reveals “the two men were sailing off Ocean Beach at about 2:30 p.m. when witnesses saw their sailboat capsize,” said Coast Guard Lt. Andrew Kennedy.  Next, the men reportedly both climbed into a small inflatable raft, which carried them closer to shore before it was upset by the waves, tossing both men overboard and into the water.

After witnesses called in the incident, the Coast Guard dispatched a helicopter and a small boat, according to the story.  The report also indicated that “the boat’s crew pulled a 52-year-old man, clutching a flotation ring, from the water, and took him to the Coast Guard station beneath the Golden Gate Bridge, where he was turned over to an emergency medical crew,” Kennedy said.  His condition at this time was not known.

Finally, the man told his rescuers that the other sailor was wearing a life jacket. The Coast Guard is continuing to search the area, using a helicopter and a small boat.   As of yesterday, Marin County officials were also involved in the search, Kennedy said via the Gate.
