Pre-Super Bowl Sobriety Checkpoint Set for San Francisco on Saturday, February 5, 2011
The San Francisco Police Department announced on their website that a “pre-Super Bowl sobriety checkpoint is set for San Francisco on Saturday, Feb. 5, at Geary Blvd. and Steiner St.” The checkpoint also “begins at 8:30 p.m. and ends at 1 a.m.”
With the big game just a couple of days away, drivers can expect (at the very least) that residents will be commemorating the event all weekend. Captain Al Casciato, who commands the San Francisco Police Department’s Traffic Company was also quoted on the site saying simply, “We’re out after football fans doing their celebrating early along with anyone else who makes the irresponsible decision to drink and drive.”
In addition, Captain Casciato also recommends via the Department’s Media Relations Unit, “appointing designated drivers well ahead of the football party, and treating them very well.” The Captain is also endorsing that folks buy dinner for their designated drivers but he doesn’t stop there.
Casciato suggests that fans who plan on drinking and traveling this season to a super bowl party or bar buy their designated driver’s…a tank of gas, give them the best seat in the house and see that their glasses are always full of soft drinks or juice.”
Finally, according to the Department, “the checkpoint is funded through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which advises motorists to dial 911 on their cell phones to report dangerous drivers.”
