Safety Concerns at Dangerous Outer Sunset Intersection in San Francisco
The considerably dangerous intersection in the Outer Sunset District where Highway (1) The Great Highway and La Playa Street meet Judah Street may soon become safer for pedestrians, bicyclists and cars if efforts by local groups to address the problems are recognized.
The issues with regard to the safety of this intersection have been ongoing for several decades, say many residents of the neighborhood.
This most serious safety concern is the MUNI transit turnaround on Judah, La Playa streets and The Great Highway which has both entry and exit points where the train sits at a standstill for lengthy periods of time and substantially reduces visibility for both drivers and pedestrians in the area. Many believe that the best solution to this problem is to reduce the time that the two-car trains park there; which would be an easy, cost effective and immediate remedy. At this time, the City asserts that the entire terminal cannot be removed, due to Federal Regulations regarding access to those who are disabled, until a new environmental study is performed at the location.
This is but one of many specific dangerous intersections in San Francisco that are in dire need of repair. Public awareness to address and ultimately reduce the increased level of danger disproportionately present at several specific intersections such as this one in the City is key to improving safety for all.
